ASWA was formed in 1938 to increase the opportunities for women in all fields of accounting and finance. The first chapter was chartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Members of The American Society of Women Accountants and their companies benefit from practical resources and benefit programs that strengthen their professional growth.

ASWA is led by a national Board of Directors that oversees the implementation of the organization's strategic plan. There is also a group of Regional Directors which serve as liaisons between the chapters and the national organization and ensure that the communication channel between these leaders is effective.
